Culture » Women Were Never Meant for The Kitchen in the Traditional Nigerian Society by: Ninoevans(m) .:. Sun, 27 Dec, 2020 - 05:06:07:pm GMT
The popular saying that women are greatly oppressed in Nigeria and relegated to cooks in Nigeria from time immemorial is a blatant lie that we must vehemently clarify whenever we have the opportunity to do so. Our fore-fathers were never gender biased and they treated their women as Princess and Queens, respecting their opinion and protecting them with all that they have. Whoever concocted such ideology about the traditional Nigerian society in other to promote her his/her feminist agenda is doing a dis-service to the nation as a whole.

The traditional Nigerian society was an agrarian society, so farming was the mainstay of the economy and women at these period loved men that were hardworking and could provide for them. This does not imply that they were after the successes of the men, rather they needed someone that could complement their effort and raise a home were they could live comfortably. The women in the traditional society were hardworking and were never left at home, as they went to farm with their husbands to till and cultivate the soil. They also joined in time of harvesting and were incharge of taking most of the goods to the market square during market days for sale. They complemented the efforts of the men so well that while the men were most time incharge of tedious tasks, the women engaged in so many tasks at a time. For instance, women were in charge of cooking, fetching of firewoods after the men must have pieced them down, fetching of water and taking care of the family.

These tasks were never gender based as young men also fetched firewood from the forest and water from streams. In fact, most times when young maidens are going to farm to fetch firewood, they either go with their father or brother to support and protect them. These tasks were designed as a means of helping the family accomplished so many things at a time through division of labour. The raising of the child was never the duty of the women alone, fathers also played an important role in disciplining them when the need arises and telling them bed time stories at night, with which they instill morals on their children. The mother was always respectful to his husband and the husband guided his home with all his might. This was the period when parents gave their life for the good of their children. Fathers and abled bodied men were the ones selected to go war whenever the kingdom was under attack and they did it not just because of the kingdom, but for their family to have a safe place to live in.

So this mentality that the female child or women were subjected to cooks in the Traditional African society, is a blatant lie and must be discarded. Let us preserve our history tell it as it is. With civilization comes the decline in agriculture and this brought about certain changes in the society.

Judging by my own perspective, I think some women are actually meant for kitchen either in traditional or modern nigerian society. Reason is that, some women fail to know their value and dignity. They choose to become a liability men, and by so doing, some foolish men use them as salves in the house. They even call them investment.
I felt sobered when my mum told me some stories about her and my dad. My mum couldn't get the chance to further more.,not even an handwork. So she later get hooked up with my dad who happens to be a graduate. Since then, my mum has been the only one taking care of the house since she don't have anywhere to go. It's so painful that she has to die without riping the fruit of her labour.
Please, let us erase the idea of "women has the kitchen" and help them in some areas we can. They are a special gift given to us men, and we should use it wisely.

@Francis:

All those men that decide to treat their women as slaves because they see her as a liability are the ones that needs to be enlightened because such act is wrong and wicked. If your woman has nothing doing, why can't the man empower her by getting her something to do. Because I don't believe that there is a woman out there who doesn't have what to offer, to me it's just that most of these men out there lack ggod communication skills with the opposite gender and so they don't know how to persuade their women to be able to know what she can do rather the only thing they are good at is looking for sex every now and then.

No woman is restricted to the kitchen except she is poorly enlightened especially at a time like this when there are lots of skill acquisition programs out there and one woman will still allow her man to restrict or enslave her. I believe as a woman if you tell your man that you want to start up something and you present it nicely to him, he will support you. it's just that even at a period like this, there are still some me that inherited the ignorance of their forefathers and will be so strong headed in allowing their woman to do anything aside the kitchen and sex. Such men needs to be enlightened that times have changed and ignorance is next to stubbornness.

Men should learn to empower their women even when she is dumb and doesn't really know her worth. Some me are even scared of empowering thier women because they feel that once she has something doing, she might start misbehaving and end up in the hands of another man so they prefer to turn her into a full house wife and hardly allow her to socialize so they won't loose her.
