Explainer: Why there will be a telco freeze during the 2023 election
Many Nigerians have panicked after MTN Nigeria informed its customers that there will be a network freeze during the upcoming general elections.

Specifically, MTN said its planned network freeze during the presidential election this weekend will begin on February 24, 2023 and end on March 1, 2023. The second freeze is scheduled to begin on March 10 and end on March 15. .

It is important to note that there is no reason to be alarmed by this notification. We'll explain why below.

Understanding Network Freezing: Network freezing is a common practice in the telecommunications industry to minimize the likelihood of network outages over a period of time. During a network freeze, operators will suspend any maintenance work that could disrupt the network or affect the customer experience.

It is the period when the network is expected to be stable because there will be no changes in the network. Operators intervene only in case of emergency.
No groundwork, upgrades or maintenance will take place during the network freeze as this may cause changes to the network and disrupt service. The aim is to limit non-essential activities on the network to critical periods such as elections.
What it means: The network freeze, which will be implemented by MTN and possibly other network operators during the 2023 elections, means that during this period the network will be stable as the operators will suspend all their regular upgrades or maintenance, which usually causes service disruptions. This is not to say that network shutdowns or service outages are misinterpreted by many.

The network freeze will ensure uninterrupted telecommunications services and continued digital connectivity of election-related communications during the election period.

MTN's explanation: Responding to the concerns of Nigerians who expressed concerns about the outage during the network freeze, MTN stressed that it is common practice in telecommunications to keep the network stable.

Regarding network freezes…we do not implement changes to our network at critical times to minimize the possibility of an outage. Keeping the network as is is a common practice in telecommunications referred to as Network Freeze,” the telecom operator said.

No wonder the network was very good during the elections. It became awful after the elections and was so unpleasant to talk to callers on phone.
