Fashion » Why are black african women not proud of their natural hair by: HotCakeAt43(m) .:. Tue, 14 May, 2013 - 04:37:17:pm GMT
I note that almost every black lady both Young and Old, Beautiful and em. . , you know. . , Ugly, Petty-Trader and Business-Tycoons, Shop-Assistants and Professional-workers, Students and Lecturers, the local Street-Girls and the top Super-Stars, in fact almost every lady from all works of life even you are not really comfortable with your natural hair hence everyone covers her hair with Wigs on given occasions.
It's remarkable that some ladies have such fake hair that is (allergic to water) fixed on top of their natural hair for so long to the extent that their scalps begin to form itching dandruff as their natural hair ooze out for mercy
What do you ladies make of this?
And for the guys: do you see wigs attractive or sexy?

AFRICANS AND THE EUROPEAN CULTURE SWAY

In few decades to come, if care is not taken, the African continent will be another version of Europe, albeit a lower grade one, because there can only be one original copy, and many duplicates. In culture, style and language. Too bad. From music, to lifestyles, to fashion trends and even accents, Africans are copying the whites in any form they can discover. The rate at which the western world's culture is sweeping through the African continent is alarming, and pitiable at the same time.

Thanks to the media and internet, the African lady can now dress like her white counterpart, look like her and walk like her. We copy the whites to the detriment of our rich values and culture. It's reported that some African languages have gone into extinction, many more will still. In as much as technology has brought many advantages and ease to the African man, we can't deny that it has also brought about its cons. The exposure education brought to the black man's land has been abused. Our men want to speak like Americans, look like them and eat like them, they even want to breathe like them too.

The trend has been set and cannot be reversed. We have embraced the curse and blessing that came with the sway. But, the little left of our culture can still be saved. Our indigenous languages, culture and values must be upheld and saved, else, the coming generation will ask us what happened to their heritage.

Black Africans generally and Nigerians in particular are vividly not proud of their natural hair due to many reasons. They prefer foreign hair to their God given hair. While they are in their childhood age they would love the baby's hair and be proud of it but once they are getting old, opposite is the story.

Now let's look at the main reason over 95% of African women prefers foreign hair to their very own hair. Let's start from when slavery started. I believe slavery was the first situation that made African women prefers foreign hair.

This is because they see white hair to be very long and fine, it is from this that they lost the pride of their own hair and prefers to have or make use of hair like the white because of the supremacy that the white displayed when they came around, making us feel like we are inferior.

Another view is the fact that we are loosing our values and we don't even believe in ourselves again as it should be. When a foreigner speaks, blacks listen but if it's fellow black such attention would not be given to the fellow black.

Another point is that blacks likes copying the foreign ways because we believe they are better. The most surprising of this all is that lots of foreigners are now switching to the styles of hair we make in Africa. Many celebrities now plate their hair in African ways but my fellow Africans have lost their self esteem and prefers to have hair like the foreigners.

To me one of the reasons why, Africans are not satisfied with there hair is because, right from time we hardly value what we have, we don't make good use of what we have, we prefer the outsiders, the foreign, and this is what as been affecting us for long time now.

Not only the women hair, if we can check very we hardly believe in what we do, we don't appreciate what we do, we hardly appreciate what our fellow black do.
But we are very good in celebrating the whites, fine we all are human being's and we are one, but we put one ahead of one, which is not suppose to be so.

If only we can celebrate the little we do, what we create, encourage one another to do more, that would give us the boldness and courage to strive more. Thank you

Black African Women not being proud of their hair can also be related to Inferiority complex, when you check some black American homes the girls with their Natural hair get bullied a lot by their peers in school and when you check some offices the women are not allowed to show off their Natural hair.

I once watched a movie about this same topic where a mother made sure she always straightened her daughter's cully hair because she wanted her to relate with the White's. The daughter grew up like that, she was always hiding her hair and fixed weavons often, she wasn't proud to show her hair to the world and kept deceiving her would to be husband about her natural self.  Her story changed when an issue happened at a salon and the owner of the Salon made her gain her long lost self esteem and she wasn't shy to show her hair to the World.
I know that fixing an extra hair is the trend now and it's very common nowadays, but I want you to just take a day out to embrace and show out your natural self.

It is not like they are not proud of their natural hair, of course we are but they attached wigs and all just to look more attractive. The natural hair is very beneficial to us because we even plait it, retorch it and even style it of which is very much beautiful but we use wigs most times to just look more attractive like i said earlier. Please take note of the "more" The natural hair makes us look attractive too but the wigs adds to it and even the makeup ladies wear too. So we are proud of our hair guys. Well, if i was a guy i will find her natural look more attractive because that is what i will have to look unto almost everyday of my life so i should be able to love it and live with it without problem, but i will also appreciate her when i see her on wig and makeup which should be on rare and special occasions not just everyday. Our hair, our pride, our glory! We are proud of our natural hair.

Hahahaha, I beg to partially disagree, although some black African women are actually proud of their natural hair, because most of them are beautiful, but they don't show it often maybe because of the texture, natural hairs can be so strong, stubborn and causes a lot of pain to maintain, so they just prefer to go through that kind of stress in seasons in order not to be pained every morning or every two days, and I hope you wouldn't disagree that some black African women actually look prettier with the wigs, weavons or braids on, than they look on their natural hair. Its also more exhausting especially when she doesn't know how to style her hair herself .. Hahaha, at this point, she will just resign to the wigs Hahaha

Am glad to see many people giving out their Views here. This is true to some extent and also not true.

Some people are actually proud of their hair and still see the necessity to look more attractive therefore they add other artificial hair to their natural hair. This doesn't mean they are not proud of their hair or anything they just want to look more attractive to themselves.
A typical natural hair could be very stubborn and hard to style , when you see most people with Natural hair combing through their hairs you would always notice that they find it to comb their hair especially when they are pulling it through the Tip. Then you find some using oils to make the hair soft and keeping a natural hair is Hardwork and I applaud people that are still keeping their natural hair.

If you were also proud of your natural hair as a man, you wont be barbing it.

Why don't you leave your hair to grow for months and see if you'll like it.

The black woman's or man's natural hair can't be styled and look good like when one has to apply relaxer and all that even with that, there are lots of women that dont have much hair on their scalp. So, you don't expect such people to be carrying such hair up and down

Their are men that always want their wives to make their hair because the natural hair is not always presentable.

It doesn't mean they are not proud of it. But in other to look good, clean and more beautiful, they use wigs and attachment.

Africa we are  used to copy  what ever  we  see  from  the  European, and this  European that we copy that  is their own way of life from  day one, that is how God created them they are white people with white hair or some even have coloured hair.
But we the  Africans God has created us naturally with our beauty  and  colour, but I just don't know why we are not satisfied on how God Has  created us.
We are not prod of our beauty, most especially African black women do not prod or their hair , I think  the reason why Africa women are not prod of their hair is because  they are black, so they think  black  people hair is not  beautiful so that  why they  try to copy the white people.
Now the Africans  women  aboundon their beautiful natural and  hair and go for the  artificial hair been  created  by the  white people  an example  of  this artificial hair is, weag, Brazilians hair, our women  doesn't need  all this because all this kind of hair are artificial made not natural but they  believe when they use the  artificial hair they  will become more beautiful and which I disagree  the natural hair is the most  beautiful hair ever.
Thanks

Re: Why are black african women not proud of their natural hair by: MissDairo(f) .:. Tue, 25 Aug, 2020 - 09:40:47:am GMT

There are numerous reasons why women wear artificial hair.

Some wear it not because they aren't proud of there hair but because they experience loss of hair frequently which has caused them to loose their front hair. Do you then expect such a woman to carry that hair to work?

Some wear artificial hair because of their busy schedule.  They don't have the luxury of time to spend in a beauty salon.

Another reason women wear wig is to protect their natural hair. Yes, you read that right.
Sun and other factors are dangerous to the hair when exposed often. That is the reason some put on wig especially those with healthy hair.

Another reason is some don't like making their hair. We have people with soft scalp and they feel pain when they try to make their hair so the best option is for them to wear a wig.

Also we have some who are dealing with certain sickness that have changed the look of their hair so it advisable they out on a wig.

Should I also talk about the fashion aspect of it.
Not all styles of the wig we wear can be made with the natural hair.

Now last but not the least.
Women wear wig because they want to and they actually can.
So why should anyone bother.

The same way you buy shoes and clothes to look good is the same way women buy wigs too.
Aren't you proud of your body?
Aren't you proud of your natural hair as a man? So why do you Barb your hair?

Interesting!

Well, I feel the question should be aimed at why African women prefer to use hair relaxer. Before I transitioned to natural hair in January 2016 I had to ask myself what really attracts African women to use hair relaxer and from asking myself i said maybe just to get the stretch like the white women and from various conversations I was able to pick this answers because it was similar to the women's response and it goes thus "my natural hair is too thick and combing it can be tiring" ooooh okay now I get why a good number of African women apply artificial products such as relaxer. Those responses got me into sessions of rethink because I knew transitioning wouldn't be so easy as my hair was already used to the application of relaxer at the end of three months and that makes the application occur four times in a year. I had to ask myself that question because I figured the desire to relax the natural hair opens women up to use wigs instead of making their hair naturally. I also realized some women use wigs a lot because they want to have the 'boss lady's kind of look which they feel the natural hair style cannot give them.

Another reason I found out is that a lot of African women think the natural hair can't be styled as much as the relaxed hair but that doesn't hold in the present age as so many hair stylist have been able to style the natural hair beautifully and it's trending so well. Even if you don't like plaiting your natural hair, it can be styled beautifully by applying natural hair products. Although maintainance of the natural hair isn't so expensive but lack of consistency can make a woman get tired of the natural hair. Sheer butter and coconut oil has been made known to be very good for maintaining the natural hair and the results have been amazing in the area of hair texture and hair growth. Also, the relaxed hair doesn't require regular washing after applying the relaxer and it can stay in the hair for up to three months but the natural hair requires washing at least once in a month and that can be a bit of task for some women so they will rather use relaxer than keeping up with the maintenance of the natural hair.

Even little children prefer using the relaxer than rocking their natural hair because they do not want to be intimidated amongst their peers just because a lot of persons feel rocking the natural hair is old fashioned and at that it's boring for the new age but that's not true because I rock my natural hair very well and the better part is that it's double the volume of some persons that relax their hair. A very important thing to work on when you are maintaining the natural hair is to keep it away from dryness because that takes out the nutrient the natural hair needs to grow well. If you haven't seen nappily ever after (smiles) I think it's time to see it.

I feel you do not really understand women. When I read the post, I had to go back to clarify if you were a man or a woman. When I saw that you were male, what you posted became clear to me. You're merely speaking from what you think and not what actually happens.

It isn't that we women aren't proud of our natural hair, it is just too much of a hassle at times to keep that. It's easier to just make all back and then put on wigs than to take that all back alone trying to maintain it at all times.
Besides, society has changed everything. Women who do not use attachments and weave one are seen as being too holy. While I know that we shouldn't mind what others say, need I remind you that it is these people, that is the society that is actually looking at us. Imagine if I went for a job interview with just all back in my head. PS: my hair isn't all that long so it basically just looks like a child's hairstyle. Would you employ me or even give me a second glance. Another reason is because of the nature of the hair. If your hair isn't long enough and you take that natural hair all around, instead of looking chic and natural or stylish, you are just going to look as awkward as anything.
And to the men that are always shoutush that they oregzr women who are more natural. Don't you think they're being hypocritical as they still cheat on their natural beauty girlfriend with a girl that wears a Brazilian hair and no brains. It's not something I heard from somewhere. It's something I've seen and experienced.
So unless you can provide a valid reason why I shouldn't use those add ons, I'll continue to remain contrary to this.

This is somehow direct and generalized.
Not all black African women are not proud of their natural hair, and also not all natural hair are unattractive to the eyes.
I also want you to know that that it is not because of fake hair, dandruffs, or scalps that make women wear wings or attach an artificial hair, it is just fashion. We are doing that in order to look good, decent and more attractive.
If you start mocking women because of their lack of beauty, are you telling me that God made a mistake while creating some of them?? No.
We are different compare to the Americans and other countries, the nature of our hair is totally different from theirs. We can't leave our hair for so long without adding anything to it.
Even if your hair is the best in Africa, you will surely add something to it.
So I disagree with that statement that we don't value our natural hair.

Re: Why are black african women not proud of their natural hair by: Obajichi(f) .:. Fri, 09 Oct, 2020 - 02:01:27:pm GMT

One of the reasons is that our black hair is very difficult to maintain. It requires a lot of hard work  to comb  & keep it in shape especially for females who have full hair.

Another reason is that it lacks that silky & shiny look which makes it so attractive.

Maintaining full black hair is very expensive. The products are often on the high side as opposed to buying  an affordable cup or sachet of relaxer.

The white woman is not interested in keeping  her hair like the natural African hair. We're the ones who are  always obssessed  about what they have.
This never ceases to baffle me.
We should be proud of what we have.
Let's make the Europeans love the Africanness in us as long as it's not diabolical.

Why are african girls not proud of their natural hair? why do they prefer to go buy wool and attachment to plait their hairs with? The answer is sometimes they feel it's not long enough, or it's not attractive enough but that's all wrong, I'm not a girl, but I have sisters and I see that their natural hairs are beautiful, I mean, take a look at how black and how soft their hairs are.

I had a friend in highschool, she had the longest hair in my class and even the whole school, her hair made her look beautiful.

I'm not a hairdresser but I've seen women plait hair and the truth is black women look beautiful with their natural hair, there are different styles like dread, dee dee, all back patewo and base, weaving, all these are hair styles that will make you look pretty.

I've grown to know my dad doesn't like to see attachment on my mom's hair or my sisters hair, he doesn't just like it, wether attachment or wools, he doesn't even want to see it in his house. He prefers my mom and my sisters

Girls I will tell you a secret, you look more attractive when you weave your natural hair. plait your natural hair with different styles.

I see black women paying a lot of money to get attachment or wools, to me I'll be thinking, why would you waste your money to buy hair when you have hair on your head?

Girls, you need to proud and appreciate your natural hair, take care of your natural hair and plait it.

There's natural beauty on your face when you plait your natural hair. So, love your natural hair and be proud of your natural hair.

Some of them are proud of the hair while some are not proud of the African hair. Some of the woman believe that changing their hair to foreign hair will make them more beautiful which it not, some of them will dye and coil their hair do to have artificial hair even some of them tint their hair to become gold or silver I think colour. But the reason while some African ladies go away with their African hair is that some of them prefer to do things as white people always do their because they made foreigner as their god.

Lolzz,I won't blame you much for all you said here simply because you are not a woman.

Will I say its true that we are not proud of our hair?or I should just go ahead and state some reasons why it seems we are not proud of our hair?
First of all,if we are to look at the white people, they are really blessed with long hair and which unfortunately, we blacks aren't so blessed with long hair like they are.
Because they are blessed with such long hairs, they set up so many equipment to help maintain their hair,if we are to bring those equipment to the blacks, every man will advice his woman to just be barbing because they are way too expensive.so even if some of us are blessed with small long hair and we decide to be maintaining it like the whites, the cost is just too high.worst of all,no matter how much we use their equipment,we can never be able to get our natural as beautiful and long as their own and for someone like me that love long hair,I would rather prefer to make braids that will reach my waist and be flaunting it.When they realize the situation on ground, they decided to help our life by providing all sort of attachments to help improve our looks.
When a girl has retouch her hair and she keeps it for a month, packing and oiling everyday, when it getting to two weeks,it won't be looking unattractive again infact it will starting having undergrowth and becoming dirty again.let not now talk of people that are keeping their natural hair, so you want that kind of person to be keeping the hair like that bah?do you have any ideal how it is so painful combing natural hair,it is very painful imagine having to be feeling hair pain everyday just because I want to keep my hair like that, does it make sense to you?my dear, you would be the first to ask me to go put attachment on my head because you won't be able to bear the kind of pain women go through when combing natural hair of which the white people's hair are not like that.
Their hair is very soft and long.
These are some of the reasons why we can not be keeping our natural hair like that.

I neither see wigs attractive nor sexy on woman's head, because beauty does not lies on what you put on, but your natural being.
I personally disgust women who put on wigs inorder to show off. They have even become lazy nowadays, they don't plate their natural hair anymore, they rather put on that ready made wig, which some ladies disgrace themselves with while fighting.
Some don't even know what fit them.,they went around putting on wig like a mad woman.
Like seriously, I don't know why the Africa ladies choose to abandoned their own God gifted hair and went ahead to use another people's hair., We are no more valuing our things anymore.
Those people they are coping value theirs so much, and they never borrow hair from Africans., So why do we?.
I see those ladies wearing wig as the most ugliest, because if they are sure of their beauty, they shouldn't add to it.

My pastor used this line once while preaching and it would fit here.

"The young wants to get old, while the old wants to get young".

You find youths dyeing and spraying their hair with all colors and using hair/beard growth creams. While the elderly are using anti-aging creams... It's so funny

Another thing to take note of is that African hair is by nature kinky and very hard to tame, hard to comb and in general difficult to maintain. So a modern lady would prefer to wear wigs that are easier to maintain than go through the stress of trying to maintain theirs. So who can fault them? No one likes to be stressed.

I don't see any attraction in wigs.

I have never been attracted to any lady because of her wig.

I feel that one of the major reasons why women are not proud of their hair is as a result of low self esteem.

When you just feel that whatever you have is not good enough, rather you choose to go for the latest trends.

What attracts me to a lady is when she's natural.

I really appreciate natural beauties.
As for wigs and human hair, I don't really fancy them.

Re: Why are black african women not proud of their natural hair by: Iyanu(f) .:. Mon, 07 Mar, 2022 - 11:18:27:am GMT

This is because we look at what they are doing out side country and we do the same , god has created us naturally here in Africa but until we used white people things or untill we behave like white people before we are convinent.

Our hair is natural not only our hair our nature of being is good and perfect, but we black people do not like how God created us , that is why you will see someone who is black using bleaching cream just for him or her to become light.
We should be comfortable with the wag God created us and lastly out hair is good in nature appreciate God for that.

@Iyanu: Many attimes we Africans fell very inferior to the whites and that is why we tend imitate their personalities.
Not knowing that we were created in a unique that is even better than they are.
They have only got a platform that we don't have nothing more...
