Under the direct measurement method, it is more elaborate in the that, it is more detailed and whenn following this method, almost all the measurements are directly measured.For example, when taking measurements for a jacket, you take elaborate measurements like, armhole depth, crosss the chest, over the shoulder, etc.

There are also ideal body measurements for women. That is, these are possible ideas of how the measurements of a woman (basic, direct, shoulder) should be. For example, knowing the bust round should give you a basic idea of what the waist round, hip round, shoulder to shoulder, armhole depth etc should be. We will be focusing on these five for now.
Bust round will be denoted by BR
Waist round: WR
Shoulder to shoulder: Sh-Sh
Armhole depth: AD
Hip round: HR

Fashion designing work is a lucrative work. It's one of most common skill that people do learn. It takes commitment and dedication to be a very good fashion designer.
Though the work can be stressful but if you have passion towards it you will be able to overcome the stress. The way you are become an expert in it depend on you and your teacher.
Fashion designing takes steps by steps. The first step starts with pressing of machine. If you not familiar with the pressing of machine you won't be able to go to the next step. You need to know how to set the thread in between the machine. Once you are able to get it you are good to go.
The second step is Hemming. You need to be perfect in your hemming because that's what you will be using mostly for your work. You need to be perfect in straight and round hemming. Once you are good at hemming then you can go into another steps.
The thrid step is taking Measurements. You need to know what it mean when they about Yards or trousers length.
1 yard is 36 inch
1 Trouser length is 45 inch.
You need to well familiar with this in order to know how to cut out clothes. You need to know the basics of measurements such as:-
*Bust
*Waist
*Half length
*Hips
*Arm band
*Skirt length
*Skirt band
*Full length
*Trouser length
*Trouser band
*Arm hole
In conclusion, once you are perfect with those steps listed above you are good to go. You can start by taking measurement for Buba and Iro. You can also try to cut and sew it. Fashion designing is good once you are ready to learn.

As a fashion designer, the major consideration we take before sewing is to take body measurements .You must have the knowledge of calculations and being creative.We make use of taperule, pen for writing down the measurement, , record book, a piece of chalk etc All these are necessary for accurate and perfect measurement that leads to a very good, neat, presentable work.
For instance, to sew a straight fitted gown for a customer, you make sure she stands straight while you take your taperule and start the measurement. Here you messure the burst (B),side burst (SB), the half cut(HC) ;from the shoulder to under the burst, followed by the sleeve length (SL), the Hand band (HB), the hip, if possible measure the waist too, then the full gown length (GL) where you want the gown to stop.
Fashion designers measurement writings differs. Let me use Felicia 's measurement to illustrate how to write down each measurements.

Take note, when sewing a fitted long straight gown, you always use the hip and not the burst to cut only when the hip measurement is more than the burst measurement. From the above measurement it is clear that we will make us of the hip to cut the perfect long gown . And again you notice from the above that the burst (B) measurement is more than the side burst (SB) measurement, it is always so.
Sewing is fun especially when you have interest and a goal driving you into it. When you have the opportunity to learn the skill, be committed to it, put hardwork in it, most importantly ask God for direction.

Before I learn fashion, I always think that it is an easy work which I could learn within 6months. But to be candid, you can, it's just mind set and daily practicals.
I can still remember then when I couldn't control the machine myself hmm, I was always laugh at, but now... I won't talk.
The major work in fashion designer is the cloth cutting, and there are series of cuttings which we must know.
The only found difficult then is the princess dart pattern, it is usually done on brown paper, it is a long process compare to the breast cut.
Fashion is sweet but it requires the brain.
There are series of measurements, especially for women, It is wide.
Some uses half length, breast point while some don't. For fittings, it is advisable to measure the half length and FFL.
It is also advisable to take general measurement of the customer for reference purpose.
