Education » WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT NIGERIAN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS by: Obajichi(f) .:. Thu, 25 Aug, 2022 - 06:43:22:pm GMT
Education has and will continue to play an important role in the life of man.

This has been a constant debate from time immemorial. People have different views about this issue in Nigeria.

Private schools , be it primary, secondary or tertiary in Nigeria are independent from the interference of the government whether financially or in administration ,while the public schools are funded and controlled by the state or national government. In other words, they are wholly or partly funded by taxation.

There are some similarities between these two categories.
Both public and private high schools require a certain number of credits in core subjects like English-language, Mathematics and science in order to graduate.

Students in both categories in Nigeria sit for the Unified Matriculation Exam (UME).

Even students at the primary levels of both public and government schools have to write entrance exams into secondary schools.

The differences are enormous as compared to the similarities.
Public schools in Nigeria have a maintained class size of a teacher to pupil/students ratio of 1: 2 which can be easily managed, this is very different from the public schools of a teacher to pupil/students ratio of 1:115 or 1/122.

Private schools do not belong to any labour union and this rules out the issue of strikes. This helps them to maintain their academic calendar while public schools belong to various labour unions to press home their demands of better employment benefits.

Private schools charge higher fees with even the cheapest being too expensive for low income earning parents while public tuition fees are quite affordable.

Training courses or seminars are regularly given to teachers in private schools while teachers in government schools are rarely given trainings to improve their skills and knowledge.

Facilities in private schools are most often available and well maintained in contrast to teaching facilities in public schools which are either not provided or are obsolete.

In all , education is like the candle that brightens our dark path. We must make conscious efforts to stabilise the state of our failing educational system in Nigeria.

Some Public schools are even much more better than private school. Students in public schools pay little or no fee. Which helps in taking kids of the streets.

Private schools in Nigeria, from primary to secondary is far better than public schools. Parents don't even think of taken their children to public schools at that level, because the teachers are not serious with them, engaging them in other activities instead of teaching them. In University, public University is far better than private University, public University have more facilities, more professors, more lecturer and their certificate is more appreciated

@pius:. You're right about that. Infact most of the lecturers that teach in private universities are basically from public universities...

Private and public schools in Nigeria , the difference is very clear you see if government has really equipped all these government school it won't be like this all the way , public schools nowadays is meant for the less privileged children in the community whereas is not like that before.

Private school more times one hundred better than the public one in private school your children will be properly monitor in terms of everything attached to the learning circle.
But in public schools students are not been monitor as expected because those teacher that are not been motivated by the government will not be happy and therefore they will not monitor the students properly.

In private school teacher also are been monitored in terms to verify if they truly perform their duty as expected so if you are a teacher in a private school you must follow all the rules and regulations in that school other wise your appointment will be terminated.

Public school especially public school in the rural area teacher will not show up in school even principal will not be around as well.

Dressing there are difference in how public school pupils dress and private school if you see the both you will believe that there is total difference.
Speaking you can't compare how private school pupils speak like that of public school .

The discrimination in Nigerian private and public schools has caused more harm than good to our society. School should be a place that provides comfort for learning but most of the things public schools portray are out of comfort.

The private schools have tried their best in all ramifications to make learning conducive for their students although it might require them to pay huge amounts of money in the end, it is worth the money. What makes most public schools turn out to be worse is because of a self-centered attitude.

A self-centered attitude is a very bad attitude that will keep recurring until we are determined to do things in the right ways. Leaders should be patriotic with their work that will help to revitalize our public schools.
