History is the study of past events for understanding of the present and the constructuion of the future. It is unfortunate that many African tribes did not have a means of documenting their history in the earliest time and this has given rise to the distortion of many historical facts and tales.

The popular version of the history of the Yorubas claim that Oduduwa was a deity sent to accompany Obatala in carrying out the act of creation. Obatala was said to have gotten drunk on the way and Oduduwa took it upon himself to carry out the task on his own. He landed at a place where he created the earth with a shell filled with sand and a cock that spread the sand across the earth. This place came to be called Ile-ife.

The second version claims that Oduduwa was the son of a king in Mecca. According to this story, Oduduwa was a man of many gods and the people of mecca were not happy with this. His continuous worship of other gods instead of Allah, provoked a conflict between him and his people. He had to run away from the place with some of his followers for safety. As they migrated, they got to a point where some of his followers migrated eastward and these set of people are said to be the founders of the Benin Empire, while the second set of people went with Oduduwa westward and got to Ile-ife. As a result of his outstanding leadership skills, the people placed him as king over Obatala.

The Real Story of Oduduwa

Oduduwa is actually a King in Benin named Ekaladheran. He was wrongly accused by one of his uncles and banished from Benin Land. Out of the pain he felt from the betrayal, he decided to leave Benin Kingdom. So he migrated to Ile-ife where he displayed great leadership skills and was later made their king. It was at Benin that he was given the name Oduduwa. After several years, the people of Benin faced great hardship and upon consultation with the high priest, it was revealed that Ekaladheran (Oduduwa) was wrongly accused. The only solution was for them to seek his forgiveness and an expedition was sent out to look for Ekaladheran and bring him back. WIth the help of some spiritual materials, the expedition found Oduduwa in Ile-ife and after a long sojourn in the wilderness and they pleaded with him to come back home. As at this time, Oduduwa was very Old and weak and he told them that he could not embark on such a journey due to his age. As a sign to should that he has forgiven them, he gave them his son, Oranmiyan (Eweka) who later ruled Benin for some time.

The Benin empire has been in existence for so long that some of its history is lost in space and time. The popular story of Benin people going to Ile-ife to ask for a King was twisted to claim yoruba superiority over the Benin people and this is not good. However, one thing is certain and that is the fact that the Benin people and the Yorubas have been in contact for a very long time.

This is very surprising because even me that didn't really know much about the history of the Obatala story can confirm this that the story has been twisted for a very long time now.

I'm saying this because I schooled in Lagos and part of my subjects in secondary school was yorba. I could remember vividly one of the topics in that curriculum has to do with this obatala story and it was stated there that he created Ile-Ife just as the original write up have stated. So I'm now confused seeing this historical perspective of the obatala story. But if this is actually true then the people that have spread this false story about obatala are wicked and selfish because I don't understand what they stand to gain. This just shows that corruption has been in our blood from time immemorial and that is why it is thriving in Nigeria today.

Hmmmmnnn but this was not the story we knew about Oduduwa.

According to the story we were told. Oduduwa assigned Obatala to go and create the earth, but when he got to earth, he got drunk from the palm wine that he made.
Then Olodumare had to send his Oduduwa to go to the earth and complete the mission of creating the earth.
When he got to the earth, he landed at Ile Ife.
There's another story of Oduduwa which says that Oduduwa's father Lamurudu was a prince in his land but when, it is believed that he came from the east.
But when his position as a pagan was threatened by the arrival of Islam, he had to move his family to a new land.
Lamurudu didn't complete the journey because he died on the way, that was when his son Oduduwa took over from where his father stopped.
He moved to the present day Ile Ife and conquered the habitants there to become the first Ooni of Ife.
All this stories are totally different from yours as a whole. Don't even know the one to believe right now.

According to how the story was related to me. Lamurudu was the one that was banished from Mecca. He and his family after the banishment embarked on the journey to travel far to find another place of abode. When they got to ile-ife, they decided to settle. Lamurudu was the gather of oduduwa and oduduwa gave birth to a son. It was oduduwa's son who gave birth to seven children. They are; oranmiyan who founded the Oyo empire, onisabe of sabe kingdom, orogun of ila, onibini of binni, among others.

I'll start by saying we have lost history and basic facts in Africa majorly. Todays generation have lost a whole part of history which is meant to be kept and taught from generation to generation because history is basically a bedrock even in today's modernisation time.

It is actually true that lots of people formulates their history having lost it to olden days slavery and colonism. History when well recorded and passed from generation to generation can be a source of motivation and encouragement to link and connect the past with the present.

It is this truth that some knows that made them wipe out the true and real historical background of other misinformed group of people. Through history the wealth and resources of a country can be linked and discovered.

History should be gealously guided and taught as paramount studies in schools today. Considering the history of Oduduwa(Ekaladheran) as you put it is one that is not so popular and known around. Who knows of its ingenuity?

That is why I will advise that good record on topics like this should be held closely. For further research and enquiry I will suggest that you recommend a source of this for perusal and confirmation as this is the way it should be.
