The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, has revealed that the National Identity Number (NIN) will soon be made mandatory for Citizens for accessing government services and interventions.

Minister in charge of the ministry, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), said this when he received a briefing from the Management team of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on their activities following the final transfer of the supervision of the commission to the ministry on the 7th October 2020.

He called on the commission to ensure a 500% increase in the number of monthly Citizens' Digital Identity Enrolments-up from the current 500,000 monthly enrolments to 2.5million monthly enrolments.

The minister, however commended the Director-General of NIMC, Engr Aliyu A. Aziz, for his commitment, noting that there has been a considerable increase in enrolments since he became the Chief Executive Officer of NIMC but maintained that there is still a need to raise the bar even higher.

He assured the NIMC team that he will do all he can, to address the challenges, especially those of funding, being faced by the commission.

According to his Spokesperson, Mrs. Uwa Suleiman, the minister also stated that he is "committed to ensuring that citizens easily obtain secure digital identity" and urged them to "enroll as soon as possible."

Well, that's good then, I mean, I discovered lately that virtually all applications these days require this NIN. loans, grants, scholarships, especially international scholarships.

If only the federal government will administrate personels at the various NIN-processing centres to make it more efficient and faster, I'm tired of the "go today, come back tomorrow" slogans from these centres. This is enough to discourage people especially the ones with tight schedules.

An online processing website can be created too to make it easier.
It's not only about "making it compulsory" but also making it accessible.

It is so unbelievable how we handle the process of National Identification in Nigeria, the NIN registration makes life easy as the citizens profiles are secured and stored in the database set up to track the records of the citizens occupying the country. It has increasingly become an issue even to get registered and issued an identity card due to lack of proper equipment and efficient personnel to take up this assignment.

I believe registering for the NIN shouldn't be as difficult as it is now, an online application is supposed to be made available in order to make registration easier for people, but unfortunately it is not so. Government should be acting better than they are presently, every Nigerian citizen should be entitled to having their own unique National identification cards, not until it is made a compulsion, this is what gives us a sense of belonging in the country and would give us confidence to move freely in the country without been harassed by security officials in the country.
The efforts should be intensified in persuading citizens to get their National Identification cards, it is very important.

I remembered the last time I did mine, Jamb said we needed the National ID card for registration, so everyone rushed to do theirs, it was really stressful for us, because we kept on going home and coming back the next day. The first one I did was in paper form, they said there is another one that comes in plastic, well, they said that one will be available few years from now.

The thing about national ID card is that, you get recognized as a Nigerian anywhere you go and your information will be in NIMC database.

National ID card is important if you want to apply for things like school and sometimes opening a bank account and it is required for other activities on social platforms. Maybe it will get to a point where we'll be taking our ID card everywhere we go.
