News/Events » LAGOS COMMERCIAL BUS DRIVERS SET TO GO ON STRIKE. by: Obajichi(f) .:. Tue, 25 Oct, 2022 - 01:09:00:pm GMT
Lagos drivers , under the aegis of Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria (JDWAN) have threatened to go on a Seven -Day mass protest over multiple extortion by Parks ,Garage Managements and Lagos State caretaker committee.

The drivers have over time have lamented the harsh treatment being meted out on them despite their dedication to their work.

The association in a statement by it's National Leader, Akintade S. Abiodun and executives have scheduled Monday, October 31,for the commencement of the protest, as it instructed its members to adhere strictly to the instructions.

The statement made it clear that the cost of transportation through illegal ticketing and tolling at almost every bus stop affects the cost of goods and services as well as having a spiral effect on the economy.

Furthermore, they experienced loss of half of their incomes on daily basis to motor park boys, payment for entertainment, security, unit chairman's food and many other ridiculous levies with threat to violence at any slight refusal by the drivers. This they equate with what is said in our local parlance "monkey dey work, baboon dey choo"

The statement also stressed that Lagos commercial drivers work like elephants but eat like ants while the urchins take a larger chunk of the drivers earnings.

Commercial bus drivers in Lagos State are demanding that :

*It should be only one passenger's money per bus not three that a driver can pay.
*Only Lagos State government tickets should be issued to them.
*No payment to motor park thugs.
*No illegal money should be paid after leaving the parks and garages.
*Stopping of harassment by law enforcement agencies like LASTMA, taskforce and RRS because they collaborate with thugs to attack and extort the drivers every day .
*Lagos State should create more official bus stops for commercial buses to avoid incessant arrests.

The association is calling on the Lagos State government to quickly respond to avert the current situation so as to avoid the impending protest as they remain resolute in pursuing justice by all legitimate and peaceful means.

Anyone who is familiar with transportation business in Nigeria will have a better understanding of what Lagos commercial drivers are going through in the hands of these highway vultures.

Even Keke and okada riders are suffering the same fate.

Lagos government needs to look into thus matter urgently.

In as much as I know how stressful it is commuting around Lagos coupled with the looming strike, I would like them to truly go on this protest , so as to stop this menace .

Yeah. They do have a point there to be precise. But there is something that can't just change even if they do the protest or move on with strike. Things like thugs.

Thugs especially in the rural area can't just be easily taken care of. It's best, the Lagos commercial Bus drivers make peace and bargain the price to that which will favour them.

The police are also scared of most of the thugs cause they have now establish their territory. Bargaining is the only way for now till a solution is provided.

In terms of multi-tickets, I think that should be taken care of.

It is more prominent in rural area that why most of the drivers instead choose to travel at the major roads and cities where they can't block to pay a ridiculous fee over nothing.
