One kind of parental involvement is school-based and includes participating in parent-teacher conferences and functions, and receiving and responding to written communications from the teacher. Parents can also serve as school volunteers for the library or lunchroom, or as classroom aides. In one survey, almost all teachers reported talking with children's parents-- either in person, by phone, or on open school nights--and sending notices home . These methods, along with requests for parents to review and sign homework, were most frequently used to involve parent. Parents can participate in their children's schools by joining Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) or Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) and getting involved in decision-making about the educational services their children receive. Almost all schools have a PTA or PTO, but often only a small number of parents are active in these groups. Another kind of involvement is home-based and focuses on activities that parents can do with their children at home or on the teacher's visits to the child's home. However, few teachers involve parents through home- based activities, partly because of the amount of time involved in developing activities or visiting and partly because of the difficulty of coordinating parents' and teachers' schedules.

PARENTS AND THEIR ACADEMICAL ROLES

One of the many functions of parenting is putting a child on a sound academical path, as this is the greatest legacy ever. This is not only done by putting your ward into the best schools or providing extra-mural tutors, you must engage the child at home no matter how busy your schedule is. There is nothing comparable and priceless like you teaching your child his or her school work.
Here are tips:

CREATE A TIMETABLE TO TUTOR YOUR KIDS

It could be bi-weekly or bi-monthly, depending on how much time on your hand. Just create that bonding time needed to afford you both an enjoyable time of teaching. It is during these times you see the weakness and mental strength of your child, and then you can know what types of amendments to make.

REWARD YOUR KIDS

Anytime your kid does well in an assignment or test or examination, let there be rewards. This inspires them to do more, since they know gifts are attached to every good grade gotten.

DON'T BE A PERFECTIONIST, ONLY WORK TOWARDS PERFECTING FLAWS

Perfectionists are like sadists, they make life miserable for students. Don't be one, embrace the fact that your children are prone to mistakes. Be less criticizing and only try to work out the talents and potentials of your children.

TEACH YOUR KIDS THE ART OF THINKING OUT OF THE BOX

Thinking out of the box is a virtue kids need to excel and stand out above others, let your kids know what great value it is.

Primarily, the role of a school counselor is to assist students at all levels, from elementary school to college. They act as advocates for students' well-being, and as valuable resources for their educational advancement.

Parental involvement in a child's academic is very important as it'll enable parents know their child's progression academically and more to it is that they will serve as home based counsellors to their children so as to encourage them to study more in subject areas that are below average percentage and thumb them up when they perform excellently.

During the elementary school, parental involvement is essential because it will increase the child's adaptation to the school system when such child sees that his/her parents is interested in what he/she does in school. It is also important for parents to continue to be involved in their children academics even after elementary school because consistent evaluation of a child's academic performance will inform parents on how they should make suggestions when the school calls for a parents and teachers meeting.

It is worthy also to note that even when a child gets into the higher institution such as the University that parents should be involved in his/her academics such that they get to know how he/she is fairing with the course of study and parents should request for a copy of each semester results so as to keep track on their children grade point. As a parent, knowing your child's grade point will make you follow him/her up to aim for an excellent class of honor for graduation after registered years of study in the institution.
