Culture » How does culture affect our personality? by: Osaroju(m) .:. Sun, 17 Jan, 2021 - 12:56:52:pm GMT
This post is going to require more of answers from our Readers. I do not have all the answers.

Culture has before now been defined as the total way of life of a people. This means that if you come across a group of people ranging from let's say 10 to infinity, you'd find a set of behavioural characters in them. This includes the way they talk (language), greet, their food, their music.

Now, I always wonder how our culture influences us. I ask a question, can one successfully decide to behave in ways that are totally different from the way his culture permits?

Please drop your comments. Thanks.

Culture is the total way of life of a group of people.

It is also the shared value, belief and norms of a specific group of people.
Culture can help to shape the personality of an individual, this is based on the fact that culture has the ability to influence the way we live, learn and behave.
There's a school of thought in philosophy known as "Tabularasa" which is of the view that individuals are born without built-in mental content, and therefore all knowledge comes from experience or perception.
So this implies that when a child is born, he comes to the world with no knowledge of his own.
The home where the child is born begins to teach the child various cultural values, like in this part of the world we are thought how to respect our elders, table manners, what is expected from us in the society etc.
All these cultural values on the long run would shape the personality of the child.

@lilcent: Nice contribution you got there Lilcent. The topic needs to be the type that is discussed almost everyweek if not daily because culture and human beings both small and great cannot be over emphasized in anyway.

Just as you have earlier stated that culture is a way of life and I totally agree with this assertion. Culture actually differs from one Continent, country, tongue, tribe, colour, race, community, indigenous people and so is on to the other.

The type of culture that is practiced in Asia is totally different from the type that is practiced in Europe likewise the type of culture that is practiced in America is totally different from the culture that is practiced in Africa and so on.

All these different types of culture and their differences dictates and determines the way of life of each individual as it affects them. If you have had the opportunity is f traveling down to different parts of Nigeria, you would agree with me that our culture only in Nigeria are so numerous.

How much more for someone to travel out of the country to the abroad, let's say Uganda or south Africa as it may be. It will be noted and seen that what makes Nigeria different from Uganda and South Africa involves their culture.

Now  traveling to a non African country will have a much more different type of life style which is much more different from the one we practice here and all these suggests their way of life. Some are ways of greeting, eating, food type, marriage, dressing, houses and lots more.

As an African first and then a Nigerian, I'm a person of culture because we hold our culture in high esteem.

My culture makes me stand out as a lady from the Ibo tribe. My culture is my identity.

As a person, people accept me the way I am. My culture in most cases is not a barrier to me. No one is perfect, and no one's culture makes him or her any better than the person from another culture.

The only issue  with my culture is that they believe in training only their own people and you shouldn't waste so much of your resources in training another man's child.

Every culture has got its good and bad sides. I choose to learn from the good sides of my culture.

**I love being me.**

Interesting question!.
Truly, Culture is the way of life of people, but apparently, it is the beleif that can neither be imposed or neglected by the peopele. It is one of the way by which we can adopt some our belief, mode of dressing, greetings and types of food.
You cannot only be influenced by the culture of the tribe you or family you emerge from, but also by the environment you found yourself.
A child can be given birth to in Nigeria, but when he grows up in a foreign country, he will surely adopt the culture their culture and way of life.
Also it happens when we are not even away from our country. When a child get influenced by his peers whose beliefs are different from the ones he is familiar with.
A child can be trained in the culture of the Yorubas and end up behaving like the igbo people.
Of course, culture does not define a man.
