Culture » ELEMENTS OF CULTURE by: Lollymerzy(f) .:. Wed, 09 Sep, 2020 - 03:22:34:pm GMT

Culture was defined earlier as the symbols, language, beliefs, values, and artifacts that are part of any society. As this definition suggests, there are two basic components of culture: ideas and symbols on the one hand and artifacts (material objects) on the other. The first type, called nonmaterial culture, includes the values, beliefs, symbols, and language that define a society. The second type, called material culture, includes all the society's physical objects, such as its tools and technology, clothing, eating utensils, and means of transportation. These elements of culture are discussed next.

Symbols

Every culture is filled with symbols, or things that stand for something else and that often evoke various reactions and emotions. Some symbols are actually types of nonverbal communication, while other symbols are in fact material objects. As the symbolic interactionist perspective discussed in emphasizes, shared symbols make social interaction possible.

Let's look at nonverbal symbols first. A common one is shaking hands, which is done in some societies but not in others. It commonly conveys friendship and is used as a sign of both greeting and departure. Probably all societies have nonverbal symbols we call gestures, movements of the hands, arms, or other parts of the body that are meant to convey certain ideas or emotions. However, the same gesture can mean one thing in one society and something quite different in another society (Axtell, 1998). In the United States, for example, if we nod our head up and down, we mean yes, and if we shake it back and forth, we mean no. In Bulgaria, however, nodding means no, while shaking our head back and forth means yes! In the United States, if we make an "O" by putting our thumb and forefinger together, we mean "OK," but the same gesture in certain parts of Europe signifies an obscenity. "Thumbs up" in the United States means "great" or "wonderful," but in Australia it means the same thing as extending the middle finger in the United States. Certain parts of the Middle East and Asia would be offended if they saw you using your left hand to eat, because they use their left hand for bathroom hygiene.

Culture, which is a way of life by some set or large group of people is differentiated by many things. This includes :

* Dressing-- Every culture has its attire to differentiate it from other cultures. In Nigeria, for example, once you see a woman dressed in iro & buba, you'll know she is a Yoruba or probably has links with the Yorubas.

*Food: This one is so significant. Varieties of food tells of a particular culture. Most Nigerian cultures pride themselves with the assorted local dishes they have to offer especially during traditional occasions.

*Greeting: Every culture has their way of greeting. In the western world , for example, a warm handshake will do. The Igbos in Nigeria also shake hands & partially hug their relatives or guests as a sign of acceptance.
These are just a few elements

Whatever culture you belong to, there's something unique in it.
Let's value our good old culture.

Culture is so valued in some states and countries, while some see it as being uncivilized, especially we Africans, we are so greedy of other people's culture and conderm ours. We mimic other people's culture and disvalue ours.
People's culture and belief help in distinguishing them from others.
There is a saying that says; about man's food is another man's poison.
Culture is the way people behaves, eat, dress and speak. Culture is something that ought to be pass from generation to generation. Some does while others are lost in their belief.

The simplest way which we can definitely culture is the way of life.culture allow us to understand how some certain things which we need to be practicing.

Culture are made or consists of different symbols that make each and everyone to differentiate each other by the language we speak, mode of our greetings and also mode of our dressings.
For an example now for anyone to identify a person been born to a royal family now,you will identify them through the beads they put on and the guards that escort them to everywhere they are going likewise the Queen's and the chiefs that rule the town together with the royal father in person of the king.
For instance now look at Nigeria as an example here,we have different ethnic groups in different tribes with different cultures which they do practice, culture make us know what is right and what is wrong due to the traditional practice they have embark on and which is guiding the individual in every way of there lifes.
