News/Events » Arsenal FAN ARRESTED FOR CELEBRATING WIN OVER MANCHESTER UNITED by: Oweiagbekemeprecious(m) .:. Thu, 26 Jan, 2023 - 12:22:43:am GMT
Six Arsenal supporters were arrested for celebrating the club's win over Manchester United at the weekend.

Cheering supporters arrested in Jinja, Uganda.

Fans wear the club's red jersey and carry a symbolic trophy.

Police said they did not have permission to hold the rally, which disturbed public order.

Arsenal came away with a 3-2 win over their fierce rivals on Sunday.

The result gives the Gunners a five-point cushion at the top of the table, giving fans around the world hope that the club can end their 19-year wait to win the Premier League.

On Monday morning, Arsenal fans were traveling in a five-car caravan when the police stopped them. One of them was carrying a trophy bought at a local shop.

"I don't know what we are doing but we are celebrating beating our rivals Manchester United," Arsenal fan Baker Kasule told the Daily Monitor.

James Mooby, the local police chief and a self-proclaimed Arsenal fan, told the BBC he had not investigated the allegations but wondered why they were celebrating when only half of the season's games were over.

"What if there is a fight with rival fans? "They did not inform the police about providing security for the march," he said.

Legal groups say the Public Order Act has given police powers that are used to suppress citizens' rights.

Lawyer and rights activist Agather Atuhaire told the BBC that Uganda's police force "continues to be high despite the Constitutional Court removing all provisions that give it the power to limit the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of association and assembly".

Arsenal and Manchester United enjoy massive support in Uganda and across Africa, and the temporary video hall in Uganda is always packed to the rafters when they play.
