Fitness/Diet » Alcohol and Energy Drinks A Dangerous Combo by: Ogiejoe(m) .:. Wed, 18 Jun, 2014 - 06:44:27:am GMT
Researchers have published a study that shows college students combining caffeinated drinks with booze don't realize how intoxicated they really are. In a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, researchers at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan have concluded that mixing alcohol and energy drinks poses a serious public health risk, especially among college students. "We found that college students tended to drink more heavily, become more intoxicated, and have more negative drinking consequences on days they used both energy drinks and alcohol, compared to days they only used alcohol," said Megan Patrick, a research assistant professor and c👎author of the study. According to the study, students who either drank alcohol and energy drinks on the same day or who combined the two at the same time wound up spending more time drinking " thus consuming more alcohol " than they would have without the caffeinated drinks. The result of spending more hours drinking raised users' blood alcohol levels to higher peaks. But because of the stimulant effects of the energy drinks, the users reported that they felt less drunk than they actually were. "This can have serious potential health impacts, for example if people don't realize how intoxicated they actually are and decide to drive home," Patrick said. But a similar study conducted by the Department of Community Health at the Boston University School of Public Health found that it wasn't necessarily the combination of alcohol and caffeine that posed a risk, but the profile of the drinkers themselves that led to negative consequences. "It appears that the consumption of caffeinated alcoholic beverages has a direct effect on increasing risk by masking intoxication and making it easier for youth to consume more alcohol,” said Dr. Michael Siegel, one of the authors of the Boston University's study. It also appears that consumption of alcohol with caffeine may itself be a marker for youth who engage in riskier behavior.”

"Energy drinks have a lot of stimulants in them like ginseng and taurine, while alcohol is a depressant so by mixing the two you're sending mixed messages to your nervous system which can cause cardiac related problems,"

High levels of caffeine can boost heart rate and blood pressure, causing palpitations, according to National Institute of Health. Mixing these drinks with alcohol further increases the risk of heart rhythm problems.

      • When alcohol is mixed with caffeine, the caffeine can mask the depressant effects of alcohol, making drinkers feel more alert than they would otherwise. As a result, they may drink more alcohol and become more impaired than they realize, increasing the risk of alcohol-attributable harms.
      • Caffeine has no effect on the metabolism of alcohol by the liver and thus does not reduce breath or blood alcohol concentrations (it does not “sober you up”) or reduce impairment due to alcohol consumption.1

Dangers of Mixing Alcohol and Energy Drinks

https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/images/fact-sheets/warning_sign.gif" class="img-fluid" alt="Warning: Consuming energy drinks that contain or are mixed with alcohol may mask the signs of impairment and increase your risk of injury" title="warning_sign" style="box-sizing: border-box; vertical-align: middle; border-style: none; max-width: 100%; height: auto;" />
      • Energy drinks typically contain caffeine, plant-based stimulants, simple sugars, and other additives.
      • Mixing alcohol with energy drinks is a popular practice, especially among young people in the United States. In 2017, 10.6% of students in grades 8, 10, and 12 and 31.8% of young adults aged 19 to 28 reported consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks at least once in the past year.
      • In a study among Michigan high school students, those who binge drank were more than twice as likely to mix alcohol with energy drinks as non-binge drinkers (49.0% vs. 18.2%). Liquor was the usual type of alcohol consumed by students who reported mixing alcohol and energy drinks (52.7%).
      • Drinkers aged 15 to 23 who mix alcohol with energy drinks are 4 times more likely to binge drink at high intensity (i.e., consume 6 or more drinks per binge episode) than drinkers who do not mix alcohol with energy drinks.
      • Drinkers who mix alcohol with energy drinks are more likely than drinkers who do not mix alcohol with energy drinks to report unwanted or unprotected sex, driving drunk or riding with a driver who was intoxicated, or sustaining alcohol-related injuries.

      Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages

      • Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages (CABs) were premixed beverages popular in the 2000s that combined alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants. They were malt or distilled spirits-based beverages and they usually had a higher alcohol content than beer (e.g., 12% alcohol by volume compared to 4% to 5% for beer).
      • CABs were heavily marketed in youth-friendly media (e.g., social media) and with youth-oriented graphics and messaging that connected the consumption of these beverages with extreme sports or their risk-taking behaviors.
      • In November 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told the manufacturers of seven CABs that their drinks could no longer stay on the market in their current form, stating that “FDA does not find support for the claim that the addition of caffeine to these alcoholic beverages is ‘generally recognized as safe,’ which is the legal standard.”Producers of CABs responded by removing caffeine and other stimulants from their products.
      • Public Health Impact of Excessive Alcohol Use

        • Excessive alcohol use is responsible for about 88,000 deaths in the United States each year and $249 billion in economic costs in 2010.
        • Binge drinking (consuming 4 or more drinks per occasion for women or 5 or more drinks per occasion for men) is responsible for more than half of these deaths and three quarters of economic costs.
        • Binge drinking is also associated with many health and social problems, including alcohol-impaired driving, interpersonal violence, risky sexual activity, and unintended pregnancy.
        • Most people younger than age 21 who drink report binge drinking, usually on multiple occasions. So the next time you're at a bar and the bartender tries to mix your alcohol with an energy drink, tell him or her you'll take a rain check.

Alcohol and energy drinks a dangerous combo.
Although  some people take alcohol for pleasure while some people take alcohol to gain relief from issue battling with them in one way or the other.
Alcohol  is dangerous to the body when too much or when it was been consumed too much too much of every thing is bad, some people take alcohol to the extent that  they will be reckless and dizzy, even  according to science it is advisable not to drink alcohol while drinking and don't drink while drinking alcohol. The high rate of alcohol consumption in nigeria is very high and this  alcohol has many side effects such as changing of skin mouth smelling bodyodur. Energy drink are of different types there are some which affects the body negatively and there are some which  work positively in the body system example of those who work positively such as lucosade bust, monster energy.

I recently got to find out how true this research is when a person close to me bought an energy drink & brought it home.

After consuming it , he found it difficult to sleep. I didn't think much of it or attach anything to it.  I thought it was just a mere coincidence that he didn't just feel like sleeping.

Some days later, the same thing repeated itself & I even had a bottle. It was when I couldn't sleep all through the night that it dawned me , the power in energy drinks.

If only energy drinks could have its toll on us like that, then it'd be more dangerous to mix  it with alcohol.

Truly, youths who mix the two drinks usually end up behaving weird & dangerously. In fact, when criminals want to operate, they take a mixture of both drinks to keep them high.

Yes this is a fact people seldom take with levity. Taking cold soda drinks, energy drinks, processed sugar and alcohols automatically kills ones system and makes ones body a breeding ground for cancerous cells to mutate and spring up. Just that if I state it here might spoil market for them.
It is safe to keep off all this intake.

Wao! After reading you guys post the first thing I uttered what "Thank You lord for making me to be in this forum" Do you know I had no ideal about this before. I don't even know people do mix energy drinks with alcoholic drinks together and I have only been seeing different different energy drinks these days, if not now that am reading you guys comments I wouldn't really know the full effect and can you believe I went to buy something in a store today so the man saw the particular drink and requested for it when they gave it to him and he saw that it is an energy drink, he rejected it immediately I didn't take it to heart but seeing this comments I now understand why he had rejected it.

I can remember one day I was travelling to Keffi in Nasarawa state I was so famished that immediately I spotted a man selling drinks, I requested for a coke but unfortunately it was a particular energy drink he had, I would have bought the drink but the price was too much for me so I choose to stay hungry and tired. Now am so glad I didn't buy it. How will I have been feeling that day if after a long journey, I couldn't sleep. Wao! God really saved my ass that day.

Thanks for the post guys. Thanks for the information and warning.

Alcohol and energy drink, what a deadly combination.
I don't see why one would like to take such combination of drink in a body he or she is supposed to maintain to a healthy state.

We live in a generation where the youths love to explore.

Most youths go as far as taking series of combination all in the name of getting high.
Not knowing the adverse effect it has on their body system.

Health is wealth. There's nothing wrong in consuming alcohol moderately.
But going as far as doing series of mixtures is not advisable in any way.

The strange thing I noticed about energy drinks is that whenever I take them ,I simply can't sleep at all.

I keep awake and feel restless all through the night.

Energy drinks don't go down well with my body system.

Many people have not realized that they react to energy drinks not only alcoholic drinks.
