Education » 7 REASONS WHY DEGREE HOLDERS ARE POOR by: Micheal(m) .:. Sun, 06 Sep, 2020 - 06:05:40:am GMT

*(1). THEY DON'T THINK BEYOND THEIR CERTIFICATES:-*

Albert Einstein said, *"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think."* Have you ever heard creativity term "Think outside the box"? One of the major reasons why most graduates are poor is simply because they can't see and think beyond their certificates. I have seen engineering students work as bankers. I have seen medical doctors with great skills in web and graphic designs. I have seen lawyers that are very dexterous with finances. The list is endless!

The basic truth of life is that the skills that are needed to be much sought after and become more successful in life are not really found within the walls of the classrooms. Your certificate is just a proof that you are teachable, it does not suggest what you are totally capable of doing. You are full of possibilities when you think beyond your degrees and certificates.

*(2). THEY PRIORITIZE THEIR CERTIFICATES MORE THAN THEIR GIFTS AND TALENTS:-*

I have often advised some of my colleagues, never to leave their gifts dormant while pursuing and hunting for jobs with their certificates. There must be a complementary balance in the pursuit of your passion and in the search for jobs. Everybody is gifted for something, but the winning edge comes from our ability to work on our gifts and bless the world with it. The very best way to develop yourself is in the direction of your natural talents and interest. In order to live a fulfilled and impactful life, we need to work harder on our gift than our job. We need to discover our gift, develop it, and sell it. Don't bury your TALENT with your certificates.

*(3). THEIR CERTIFICATES PREPARE THEM FOR A WORLD THAT NO LONGER EXIST:-*

It has been found that most of the skills taught in schools are becoming obsolete in the present World. The World has changed a lot, and so are people's need! It is imperative to know that the present form of university education does not prepare students for the future. Graduates are becoming endangered species in the face of a changing World. Our archaic methods and approaches of learning are preparing graduates for a world that no longer exist, as we are churning out degree holders every year with certificates that have face value but no intrinsic worth. Most learning institutions are filled up with lecturers and pseud👎educators with lecture notes, methods and approaches that have lost relevance in a changing world.

*(4). THEY KNOW LESS ABOUT THEMSELVES BUT KNOW MORE ABOUT OTHER THINGS:-*

Certificates and degrees don't reveal people to themselves they at most measure our *Intelligent Quotient (IQ)*. I have often tell people that there is *No Recovery Without Discovery*. A poor man is simply someone that has not discovered himself. The more you discover yourself, the more you realize the treasures that are hidden deep within you. We carry inside ourselves latent treasures that can only be unveiled through self-discovery.

*(5). CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES CAN KILL INITIATIVES:-*

Degrees and certificates can close up your minds to ideas while initiatives open it up. If you are not very careful, your degrees and certificates can close up your mind. The purpose of education is to keep your mind perpetually opened towards limitless possibilities!

*Fred Smith* saw an opportunity for overnight delivery of anything anywhere in the USA, and ultra-fast delivery anywhere in the World, so *FedEx* was born. It will be interesting to know that Fred Smith got a grade "C" in a Yale Economics class for an idea that the Professor saw as unworkable. Fred Smith's company became the first American business to make over ten billion dollars in annual profit. Beginning with just 186 packages delivered the first night, FedEx now delivers in over 200 Countries using over 6,030 Aircraft, 46,000 Vehicles and 141,000 Employees.

*(6). DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES POSITION YOU TO LOOK FOR JOBS (EMPLOYMENT) AND NOT FOR OPPORTUNITIES:-*

Our certificates and degrees prepare graduates to look for jobs and not open our eyes to life changing opportunities. You are not poor because you don't have a job you are poor bcos you are not seeing and seizing opportunities. Being POOR is simply Passing Over Opportunities Repeatedly! What keeps people ahead in life is not their education or degrees, it is simply the opportunity that they seized. Jobs may be scarce but not opportunities. As long as there is a problem to be solved, there will always be opportunities. It is a waste of our education, exposure, and experiences if after we graduate from school, all we think about is searching for a job. An enlightened and educated mind should be able to see and seize opportunities.

*(7). CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES PREPARE PEOPLE TO LOOK FOR SECURITY AND NOT TO TAKE RISKS:-*

We must be willing to make mistakes and take breakthrough risks. Taking risks and learning from mistakes help us in knowing what works and what does not! When *Thomas Edison* was being questioned by a mischievous journalist on how he felt for having failed for 999 times before getting the idea of the light bulb, his response stunned the whole world when he confidently said, "I have not failed 999 times, I have only learned 999 ways of how not to make a light bulb". Many of the graduates and degree holders are becoming progressively poor because the skills required in the modern World to get rich are not taught in schools and institutions. By the year *2025*, we will lose millions jobs to automation. This means that future jobs will look vastly different by the time many people graduate from the university.

Most future jobs will involve in *KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION AND CREATION, AND INNOVATIONS* and people that are only equipped with skills found in the classroom will definitely be a misfit in an ever-changing world. Skills like critical thinking, creativity, people's skill, STEM skills (e.g Coding), complex problem-solving skills etc. are central to living a more comprehensive and productive life.

*In Conclusion*, some candid advice to graduates and students in institutions is to think wide, deep and outside the box. Take volunteer jobs, and don't be afraid to navigate fields that are different from your field of learning. Your future career will require you to pull information from many different fields to come up with creative solutions to future problems. Start by reading as much as you can about anything and everything that interests you. Once you get to college, consider double majoring or minoring in completely different fields. Trust me, it'll pay off in the long run.

Don't limit yourself to the classroom. Do something practical. Take a leadership position. Start a business and fail that's a better entrepreneurship. Contest an election and lose. It will teach you something political science will not teach you. Attend a seminar. Read books outside the scope of your course.

Think less of becoming an *Excellent Student,* but more of an *Excellent Person*. Don't make the classroom your world, but make the world your classroom. Step forward and try something extra. Invest in something you really believe in! Real financial security and freedom is not in your job, but in your passions, gifts, talents, and in your ability to see and seize opportunities!

Nice write up bro. Most graduates fail to realise that SCHOOL rewards people for their memory. Life rewards people for their creativity and ability to solve problems.
School rewards caution, life rewards daring. School hails those who live by the rules, life exalts those who break the rules and set new ones.
Being top of your class does not necessarily guarantee that you would be at the top of life. The world is filled with poor graduates, but rich opportunists.
Kevin Ngo said: “If you don’t make the time to work on creating the life you want, you are eventually going to be forced to spend a lot of time dealing with a life you don’t want.”
Your certificates and degrees are meant to help you gather the experience and expertise needed to fulfill your dreams; they are not your destination.
I have watched pitiably many graduates with degrees and certificates languishing in poverty looking for jobs that don’t exist, while people with keen eyes for opportunities reach the pinnacle of success in the most unlikeliest of ways.
Do you have a graduate or degree holder around you that is poor? I bet you have, as they are everywhere.
I have a very painful truth to dish out to graduates out there: Your degree or certificate is not the cure to poverty; the cure to poverty is your ability to see and seize opportunities.
Degrees and certificates positions you to look for jobs and not for opportunities.
Certificates and degrees don’t reveal people to themselves; they at most measure our IQ (Intelligent Quotient).
I have often told people that there is no recovery without discovery. A poor man is simply someone that has not discovered himself.
The more you discover yourself, the more you realise the treasures hidden deep within you.

This is Fantastic.
I am more inspired by your write up. Many people fail to understand that Education is just the way to success and not the key to success.
Our problem is that, we think too high of our academic performance and grades than any other thing.
We also want to work in a office and dress corporate, that is all what is  freaking us without checking the end result. We will discover that most of the great people today are drop out. They go for their potentials rather than their credentials.
Even parents we encourage their children to go for education than to activate their raw talents, they think its just a waste of time.

Due to this thinking, we have a lot of crime act as a result of unemployment in the society, where it is hard to secure job after school and there is no alternative.  If you get a job and become a salary earner, you are nothing but a civilized slave. You will surely have a boss which means; building on someone success. You will also be collecting salary which means; something always low and ridicule you.
When you a an employee, you will surely lack three things; freedom, time and choice.
*You can never be free to do anything you want because you are not the owner of the company.
*You will not have time for yourself, you will always be at your boss service.
* you will not be able to make your choice under your boss order.
Your Boss is leveraging on your time and knowledge, why can't you do the same.
Why not think aside what you are doing right now, think of the fruitful future and not today.

Waaawu, nice one! The fault lies on curriculum, policies and individuals. There was a time that all you need to combat poverty and be on top of your game is education. Days when graduates were rewarded with cars and good paying jobs, days when first degree was more than enough. And our policies didnt Change nor improve even with numerous changes in life situations. We have moved into a new world order long ago but we have failed to realise it quick that education is just a platform to staying relevant, just a way out of several ways that lead to the top.
There was a time that education changed the way of life, made people better but these days, the higher percentage of nuisance are educated. Ironic right, its the world we live in.
We need to wake up and realise that aside education being the bedrock of civilization, there is nothing more if you don't build on it.

Wawu! This writeup is fantastic and highly educative because i have learnt a whole lot from it and it has blessed me. School is not the bulk of it, we have to be able to develop ourselves personally so as to make us more creative and relevant in solving issues of life other than mathematics, physics, etc that rarely applies to life issues and problems.  Some people have the mindset already of going beyond the four walls of the school and doing better things with their skills/talents which is very good too while some still depend solely on their certificate but the truth is that it works for some and doesn't work for some people but which ever will work we do not know yet that is why we must develop ourselves in other areas alongside with our academics. We need to be versatile and yet be focused on where we are going to and what we want to do with our lives so we can start the development early enough so as to be relevant in that particular aspect/field of our life. i love that quote that says that "Dont make the classroom your world, but make the world your classroom" This is very deep because it mean that you learn beyond the four falls of the classroom and still develop yourself in every other area that is different from what you are studying in your classroom and that even makes you be above others because you are doing what others are not doing and like that yöu know things above them and they begin to come to you for advice so as to learn from you meaning you are becoming a solution/ source of inspiration to other people too. Learn beyond the four corners of the classroom and be a solution to your world.

Why some degree holder are poor despite all the years spend in school .

Some degree holder are not adequately competence in the sence that they can not defend the result in their hand, some university students during their course of study they don't attend to class they don't participate in any school activities and you will see them with their certificate at the end of the day , such graduate will perform low in all area .

Secondly the certificate does not guarantee you future success because as the world is moving we have to move with it , it is not all about having certificate alone now but having a reliable source of income.

Corruption is in everywhere did you know that there are some undergraduate degree students that doesn't appear in school and after graduating they will be the one to first obtain certificate.

Some even go to the level of buying degree certificate now tell me someone who just buy the certificate will be bragging all around in the society .

Students do not read there books anymore they just find there way out and get things done either good or bad no one care either right or wrong no one cares also.

@abbey: we are in the era of social media and social media make all things easier I said , some people will just follow what is going on in class may be through video call , or video recording and whereas they are supposed to be in school for proper understanding.

B. Fake certificate. There are lot of fake certificate out there some people claim to be a degree holder with fake result , imagine someone who does not have any educational experience and training and have the certificate with him or her when such person is at the labour market practicing in a particular field people will see him or her as a degree holder but the result is been manipulated and fudge.

Thank you very much for this write up...
This is actually true amongst graduates.

They tend to be so accomplished and comfortable after attaining their certificate...

@Vickybrown:. Well said bro, the world will only reward you for your ability to solve problems.

The world doesn't care about your certificate.

Your education means nothing to the world if you can not use it to solve problems...

Well I feel one of the reasons why most graduates are poor is because they were trained In our education system to just learn only facts.

Instead of these to train their mind on how to reason on their own, they choose to continue with the learning of facts they thought just like robots, no incentive and creativity.

When they go out to seek for jobs they would get them bcos they are not creative...

This is true.
Many degree holders feel just having the certificate is enough to get them a job. Unfortunately, it's not so.

They can't even think outside the box. Even when opportunities to make money abounds all around them, they still can't realise it.

They feel so relaxed once they've acquired their certificate and refuse to make an extra effort. In fact, some certificates are even fake these days.

The economic situation of Nigeria has made everyone wiser not to wait for only white collar jobs.

Having a degree is not synonymous with becoming rich. You need to have a deep understanding of what it takes to become rich through your certificate or better still in a way you are passionate about.

The reason why many graduates remain broke is that they've refused to see life beyond their certificate while some are only concerned about their certificate fetching them a job.

If I may ask why do you think higher institutions introduce skill acquisition courses? It's because they see life beyond having a certificate.

The saddest part of the story is those who have first class and they did not get a job after school. They now start regretting having the first-class certificate but it shouldn't be: the certificate might not work instantly but it doesn't mean it won't work later.

Pending the time the certificate will work, get busy with other things that will bring food to your table. Don't let anybody make you feel bad about your little beginning, brace up and see beyond the ordinary.

**Life is good**

Lack of Experience: A degree can provide a solid foundation of knowledge, but often, it is not enough to secure a job or progress in a career. Employers may also value practical experience and skills, which a degree alone may not provide.

Limited Career Opportunities: Some degree may not lead to as many job opportunities as others. For example, a degree in a highly specialized field like aeronautic engineers may have limited job openings, which could make it more challenging to progress in a career especially in Nigeria.

Poor Networking: Networking can be critical to career growth, and individuals who do not build strong professional relationships with others back in school, may have a harder time finding new opportunities or advancing in their current role.
