News/Events » WHY THE POLICE FIRED TEAR GAS AT #EndSARS MEMORIAL--SP HUNDEYIN. by: Obajichi(f) .:. Fri, 21 Oct, 2022 - 06:57:43:pm GMT
What turned out to be a peaceful gathering for the second memorial of the #EndSARS protest yesterday, went awry when the police fired teargas and water canon to disperse the demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Thursday 20th.

This has attracted reactions from all quarters.
The procession carried dummy caskets, blood-stained Nigerian flags and garlands, had defied the earlier warnings of the state police against hosting the protest at the Tollgate.

Popular artistes like Falz, and Mr Macaroni were in attendance.
The Lagos State Police Command through it's Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has explained why his men fired teargas at the scene of the memorial.

Hundeyin said that peaceful persons were allowed to move freely without police interference but some lawless ones started threatening the existing law and order in the area.

He further explained that they were already gathering at the toll gate as opposed to doing a peaceful procession.

In a bid to save the situation, police personnels fired teargas and water canon.

The Spokesperson also emphasized that there was no record of shooting, injury or fatality and minimal force was applied on them.

He reiterated that no protester was in their custody as all apprehended troublemakers were kept for a short while and released when normalcy had returned to the area .He made it clear that all these actions were done in fulfillment of their mandate of maintaining law and order.

Many have divergent views to this explanation and that there was absolutely no need for the use of teargas on innocent citizens.

What do you think of this ?

Even if what they saying is true, the Nigerian police has always had a way, that is a reputation of painting a situation that was faulted by them against a citizen, of this country that is not above the law. In Nigeria only the rich in power are above the law. What a country!🤔
