Fashion » HOW DO WE PROTECT OUR HAIR DURING THE HARMATTAN SEASON? by: Obajichi(f) .:. Tue, 20 Dec, 2022 - 04:31:54:pm GMT
The harmattan season is accompanied by dust and dryness everywhere especially in African clime.

Although it's quite pleasant with the cold that comes with it but definitely not for our natural hair.

These days, it's more in vogue to wear natural hair. Whether you're a male or female, it's not something you'd want to battle with.

So here's some suggestions on how we can take proper care of our hair in the harmattan season.

1) Make protective hairstyles: This will help protect the ends of the hair
from breakage because they are the most delicate part of the hair. Protective hairstyles like cornrows or wigs can make the hair grow and stay healthy.

2) Increase water intake : Generally, water is good for the body. More water intake when there's intense dryness will help keep the hair more moisturized during the harmattan season. If you don't like drinking too much water, then this is certainly the time to change that habit, for the sake of your hair and skin.

3) Eat more vegetables and fruits : This will help provide you with more vitamins and minerals the hair needs .

4) Use the spray mixture: I use this a lot because I wear natural hair. If you can't afford the already made ones, then you can make one for yourself.
It's a mixture of water and oil ( you can use olive oil or coconut oil).
Spray regularly , say, every three to four hours as this will serve as a daily moisturizer .

If you have more tips let's know how it can be helpful to us as the hair is part of our covering and beauty.

Harmattan season has a way of affecting hair, especially natural hair. I was once using a relaxer on my hair not until I saw the way people flaunt their natural hair and I began to like it so I decided to barb my hair. After some time my hair started growing back and now I have soft and fine natural hair.

It wasn't easy growing and maintaining natural hair, especially the way the hairdresser complains about your hair when plaiting it can be discouraging. Nevertheless, despite all odds, I kept it but I must say that harmattan does affect it a lot.

One thing I now do to keep the hair growing and safe from harmattan season is to tie a scarf making sure no hair is outside. To be sincere this works a lot coupled with using oil to rub it.

Also, one thing you should avoid during harmattan is combing your hair often. It can make the hair keep pulling off. The best thing is to comb it once then tie a scarf.

First off, this topic is an important one and I appreciate the poster for bringing it up. All the points the poster penned down are valid and I learn new things.

For instance, about how taking enough water helps the hair as well as the best kind of hairstyle to carry during harmattan. I've put it at the back of my mind, I hope I remember when there's harmattan.

In addition to all that's been penned down, I'll like to add that during harmattan, it's not good to leave one's hair undone. Even if it's simple weaving, it's much better than leaving it undone.

Leaving it undone increases the breakage and loosing of hair. It also makes the hair to due for relaxing faster than it should.

Someone mentioned that she ties a scarf every time during harmattan. Well, I'm afraid to counter that, that's unhealthy. I've seen people tie scarf all the time only for them to lose all their precious hair.

Tying a scarf is a bad idea, especially during the heat period. The heat generated in the head burns away all the hair. Instead of tying the scarf, we should ensure we don't leave it undone. Exposing the hair and head to air is simply the best all the time!
**Wonders**
