Culture » THE WIDOWS' PLIGHT -PART ONE by: Obajichi(m) .:. Tue, 06 Sep, 2022 - 02:39:24:pm GMT
When a married woman loses her husband, she becomes a widow but when a married man loses his wife , he becomes a widower.

The loss of a marital partner rubs off more on the woman than the woman. That is why widowhood is a phenomenon that cuts across all races. Widows in the western world are secure and have their sources of incomes.

From time immemorial, Africans have meted out cruelty on widows in the name of culture.

In Nigeria, the case isn't any different. Victims suffer all manner of ill-treatments. Their heads are shorn, they are made to wear black garments for certain period of time, even sometimes forced to marry their late husband's relative or sleep with the corpse. The list is horrifying.

Widows are treated with no regard. Those amongst them who are financially handicapped suffer hunger, poverty and social exclusion with their children.

Some of them are driven to suicide because they are stigmatized. They are even blamed for the death of their husbands even if the cause of their death was natural.

Very few African countries like Kenya have Non-Governmental organizations (NGO's) have support systems for widows and their children.

Although here in Nigeria, we have many private organizations and kind hearted individuals, the society is still hostile to widows. They are abused, considered inferior , sometimes criminalised and are subjected to inhuman practices.

If you have seen a widow around you, you'd definitely understand what this article is about.
You can let us in on some of the unbearable things they go through.
