Careers/Employment/Vacancies » Skill Acquisition: A must for everyone? by: TYMartins(f) .:. Tue, 30 Jun, 2020 - 12:19:51:am GMT
When we hear skill acquisition we here another source of income. However, not everyone is interested in learning a skill, either as a hobby or as a source of income.
Society has pressured a lot of people to seek other skills save from their educational certificates in order to survive, yet some still don't see a need for it. Some parents don't even support their kids learning a skill because they feel it's not as prestigious as getting a white collared job.
With the growing rate of skill acquisition, people feel if you don't have a skill, you are not really serious. So, is it compulsory to have a skill? How can you survive the look down someone else gives you when you say you don't have a skill?

Everyone wants to land a white collar job but we keep forgetting that a white collar job isn't for everyone. Learning a skill is very important. There are alot of choices in which we can pick from varying from Makeup, bead making, fashion designing, catering, capentry and alot more. Find the one that interests you the most and enjoy it. Relying on white collar job isn't the trends these days. You can make alot of income from a skill aquistion.

Skill acquisition isn't really a must for everyone but in my country Nigeria to be precise it is a must due to unemployment and also for our mental state. The country isn't doing well enough to up to provide a job for new or fresh graduates.you can't be sitting down at home doing nothing, going around looking for jobs   when you could   learn something that can fetch little money  funny enough  some people make it big in this places.  So how can one survive the look down when you say you don't have a skill, truth be told it is really hard but I would love to go with giving the fuck off attitude or asking for help if the person is responsible and matured. For example most people who learn or acquire a skill have the money or have where to get the money so what happens to the 10% who don't have enough to learn a skill ? I feel if you don't want to help don't look down on people you don't know how they are feeling or what they are going through. Though you could start learning from YouTube videos which wouldn't be the same as paying for the skill and getting a realistic tutor but atleast you tried and you are also getting the basic lesson.

Regardaing Nigeria of Today,I would advise people to learn skills instead of waiting for one Job to start Knocking on your door house.

Some people see skills acquisition as a thing for poor people....The fact is a lot of people who made this their source of Income earns better than those with the white Collar Jobs,Even if you are fortunate to get a job still acquire skills,You may not necessarily need it but you are exploring,You are gaining more Knowledge.People here and there are acquiring skills so what are you waiting for,I see people that do not want to acquire skills as Lazy,Skills Acquisition doesn't really mean you have to Go to someone to learn,Go to Youtube you would surely learn somethingthere.

Skill acquisition should be something one doesn't have to be pressured to do but what someone WANTS to do. In our society, some shun the idea of learning skills while some just encourage it 'just because'; only few people actually see the importance. Skill acquisition has its importance and if only we look on the brighter side, it should be encouraged and not forced.

Skill acquisition a must for everyone. Nowadays people no longer  get job  opportunities so that is why we must  engaged in  to a particular skill, when  someone engaged in to a particular skill  acquisition  then you  will be able to depend  on your self for living. Skill acquisition  is a way of  life  to get source of income. I am a student of ekiti state university 300levevl studying educational Management and I have a particular skill acquisition which is Tailoring, I pay all my bills in school  through the  help of my Tailoring skills, some  do not even attend school  but they are perfect in a  particular skill  acquisition, skill acquisition make a person to depend on itself  not on till you look on another person before you take good care of your life. Nowadays even the government find it difficult to gave out job to people so the best  thing to do is aquaring a particular skill. We have so many skills  which  people can engaged in such as Tailoring, barking, mechanic, hairstyles, babing, and so on... Thanks

Skill acquisition is very important in the life of every individual. Skill acquisition is the process of being trained on a particular field and becoming an expert in the choosen field.

It is quite saddening that many people are unemployed in the country and they do not take steps to make changes, always seeking white collar jobs. While waiting for the white collar job, add value to your self, learn skills - skills that could buttress your certificate, you could even dive into a new field that is not related to what you studied.

Skills open doors of fortune to an individual. A person who has various skills that are technical like, software development, digital marketing, management skills, amongst others are well sought-after by companies as they can do many functions that would yield profit for their company.

People with skills are the employers; In a country like Nigeria, the government are still finding it hard to provide job for citizens. With the emergence of people with skills (all types) when they decide to go on a large scale, they would employ more hands for the job i.e creating jobs for the citizens.

A skilled person is self employed. I had a talk with a graphics and website designer and he said " there's no job currently that can pay him". The pay he gets most times weekly is another man's monthly pay.

Now, I'm not against white collar job but the thing is have something else to offer. This kind of man if he eventually decides to work in a company and in tough times the company had to shut down, he definitely has something to rely on - his skills.

A skilled man, can never go hungry, as they have an open mind to learn and apply what they have learnt. Gone the days of the "jack of all trades master of none" slang, it is  now "...master of all". Acquire these skills as much as you can and be sure to be good in all.

I jokingly asked my friend one day,  "I'm I normal? I don't have any skill acquisition". It's actually true. I don't know but I've never been moved to learn any 'handwork'. It came to a time in Nigeria where if one doesn't have any 'handwork', then the person is probably useless.
Growing up, I never had the chance to learn any skill because I wasn't interested (maybe because I don't like the way apprentices are being treated: they are being treated as slaves). I was more interested in formal education (skill acquisition is also known as informal education). Does that mean I'm useless?

Skill Acquisition is very good, but people are abusing it. In Nigeria, once you can properly bake a cake, twist hair, make fine designs for clothes, then the next thing is to open a shop. Which doesn't suffice much, we have them all around. They've made skill acquisition so important that formal education is nothing. Starting from the basic school, the children are subjected to learn a particular 'handwork' which will affect their concentration level in school: most of them are always average students. I believe learning anything should be during the holiday session and not during school session. These children are made to believe that skill acquisition is more important than their academic works. So some drop out of school when they achieve learning something. While some petulantly and reluctantly achieve their university degree. The coming to shore of skill acquisition is to help when formal education seem to fail. And not the order way round. It is seen as a substitution.

We also have people who are not interested in formal education, it's like their brains weren't designed for school. Informal education (skill acquisition) can be recommended for such people. Well, education is still important because one way or the other it will be required.

For me, i think we need balancing: skill acquisition and formal education.

Having knowledge of how to do one or two things is good aside from the formal education we acquire. Today,  Nigerian economy is not encouraging at all. I have seen several graduates surviving on the skill they learnt after writing millions of application letter without getting a job.
If we depend solely on what we learnt in school, we will soon discover that it is not just enough.

A person once said that your children can inherit your business but they cannot inherit your job. To me, this means that even if are lucky to be one of the few people  that get a white collar job after graduation, we will soon discover that whatever we receive as salary may not be enough to cater for our needs and that of our family. Another source of income is needed to argument whatever income we make.

The importance of  learning a skill cannot be overemphasized as whatever we learn stays with us for life while  any job we are able to get with our formal education is just for a while.

Today's word is not one that encourages anyone to sit with arms folded. Even with the prevalence of white collar jobs, it is expedient to acquire entrepreneurial skills, which can be used as a means of generating extra income. Records to the world's most successful men and women today do not reveal people who sat in one place from dawn to the disk, for some monthly wages, but those who took up the challenge to start up worthwhile ventures not fearing risks or the lack of finance. These are the real entrepreneurs. And you can be one of them!

There are prices to pay though :work hard, be humble, be determined, be prayerful, be innovative, use your talent.

Skill acquisition on the other hand is getting all the necessary training and experience needed to carry out a trade or business successfully.
That you have no degree or financial support is an excuse for you to stay idle. You can harness your innate abilities and talents for your own betterment and for the advancement of your family. You can acquire skills and become the owner of your own business instead of living from hand to mouth or waiting endlessly for the dream job. Like the godly woman in proverbs 31 who actively and heartily sought for wool and flax, worked them and used the proceeds to bless her family and others, you too can for the love of your family rise up, work, save and lay up treasures for them! If nothing else let love for these loved ones (whether or not they are there now) spur you into action today.
Instead of just sitting at home complaining  about boredom, you can kill the boredom yourself!! Or you sit down gossiping wasting your time. Invest now for tomorrow!

Re: Skill Acquisition: A must for everyone? by: Flochords(f) .:. Tue, 21 Jul, 2020 - 03:31:20:pm GMT

This is a big question that needs to be critically looked into in the sense that skill acquisition is actually nice but not everyone is interested in it, while some people see it as a must either you are interested or not if you want to make ends meet.  In my own opinion, skill acquisition is not actually a most for everyone, as many that love one skill or the other and is interested in learning it and earning with it can actually go ahead with it because there is something called "Passion" that is attached to it. Do you actually have passion for that skill? or you are doing it because everybody is doing it?.or you are doing it because you are just forced to learn it? If you really want to make it from that skill, there must be a passion you have for that skill that will keep pushing you forward to offer services to people In other to just find yourself practising that skill again. It is a very nice idea to have a skill and it is wisdomable too, but if a person is not interested in anything skill acquisition, I will candidly advice, the person is not forced to learn one especially if the person is an educated person, the person might just have passion for education and the white collar jobs and since there is also a passion driving this, success is actually guaranteed..
There are different skills in this day and time such as: Fashion designing, Hairdressing, Barbing, Baking, Event decoration and planning, weaving, shoe making, graphic designing, etc. It is of utmost importance to know about and learn the skills you desire, dont be forced and don't copy anybody in choosing. Go for what you want, go for the things you desire(if it is academics or skill acquisition), have passion for it, be deligent with it , be consistent and you will see how successful you will be in what you have chosen. choose wisely and passionately.

Skill acquisition is very important for everyone in the society. But acquiring the right skill is what matters most.

Choosing a skill is like choosing a hobby. Something you love doing and not because of the money. Because that way you can get too know more and even devise ways that will ease the stress for you. But doing it for the money will become a problem during times when money stops coming in like before.
It is better to have a skill before you finish your university education because that way if what you studied doesn't give you a job, your skill will.
Also it can be an avenue for you to multitask in situations whereby both your skill and your certificate gives you job.

In our contemporary society, many people have set their minds to attaining white collar jobs probably to have a define source of income. Yeah, this is good in  terms of generating money  but what people don't understand and seem to neglect so much is skill acquisition which is highly beneficial.

Most people tend to look at skill acquisition as stressful and time consuming and would prefer to go for what will generate money faster for them. They fail to see that the time spent in acquiring a skill actually has a long term effect in efficiency and productive. So because learning a skill may take maybe 3 months or 6 months to achieve, they tend to leave it.

Come to think of it, wouldn't it be better to acquire a profitable skill that can last a long time in productivity which can even increase in profit than to settle for a one time pay job which is at a fixed price? I'm not saying taking jobs is bad, after all it gives you a certainty of what to expect at a particular time. But skill can actually so productive that someone engaging in productively can actually gain more than a salary earner.

It pays to learn a skill even when engaged with a salary work, that way you can benefit both ways and if peradventure you lose your job, you still have a skill to fall back on.

Well I believe in this life everyone is either selling a product or buying one, its just determine by what you're either buying or selling at a point, the truth about life is no employer will pay you to his inconvenience because his interest is profit , yes so you see that dirty guy frying akara on the street and speaking grammar, at times you will wonder why such a an educated young man doing that , most times its not that he didn't get a job but he just want to be under anyone because he realises that his 7-6 job can't get him that Ferrari but his little profit from time to time with diligence and knowledge can get him there .

A skill set will not only sustain you but keep you relevant and one day make you a boss of your own, let's imagine this pandemic attack on the earth, some people realised how irrelevant they were to that their organization, they way some people became dispensable was amazing , imagine a branch manager in a bank loosing his job. How chaotic and he could not even complain because no court will hear his appeal .

Even government was retrenching workers, what does this mean, that we are being told that the labour market will only pay for a little while only the tradesmen will rule just as it has been through out time . you must get a skill set. Improve yourself . make yourself a boss of your own. Learn a trade . be resourceful not only in your career.

I wonder what is happening to families that both father and mother lost their jobs and none of them had the time for extra skill, how will they cope with life now .. How will they feed or school their children or at most provide data for that online class when food to eat is becoming an issue !.

So skill is very important. It does not have to be tailoring or carpentry, you can learn digital skills and be a freelancer from the comfort of your couch

Skill acquisition is very essential.

It has even been Incorporated as a course in some tertiary institutions.
Not everyone would get a white collar job and even if you have one, it is good to have something you can fall back on as a side hustle.
There are many skill options out there, make sure you're skilled in at least one of them.

Learning skills isn't a bad thing is another job that you can never forget even if you are old ,.
Many young people wants to do white collared job ,is good but one should have another thing doing .you never can tell what will happen tomorrow ,they can sack you or tell you to resign, but if you have a skill and you know can fetch you money no matter what ,you won't worry about them sacking you or telling you to resign because you have another business fetching you money

We are living in a world that it is virtually impossible to get a job without having a skill. Even with the white collar jobs that is prevailing, it is expected to have a skill that would fetch you some cash. Most records of the most prominent successful men and women do not only rely on their whutcolar job in one but had another separate work that fetches them money. That is why the question goes thus, "skill acauisition:A must for everyone?". Yes but it is necessary but not compulsory because you cannot force someone to do what they do not want to do. That a person do not have a certificate or good financial background does not mean such individual cannot partake in acquiring a skill. It is good to do something and fail because you tried but it is bad to do nothing and just stay idle. Acquiring skills unleashing your true talent. There are some traits a person needs to have so as to enrich his skills and talents. These are :
 1.  Agility:a person who wants to have a good skill and to norture it well, such must have an agile mind. Such individual must be able to think differently(but positively) and intelligently.
 2. Courageous :a person should be able to have extreme courage to flow with the challenges he or she is facing. Low patronage is the main hindrance that most people fall into.
 3. Dynamic:a person that wants a skill should also be versatile in his or her creativity. He or she should have the habit of having new ideas that would suits his or her environment so as to bring a good and better patronage.
 4. Hard working : a person aspiring to have a good hardwork should be a hardworking individual. A lazy person cannot acquire a skill that would fetch such person income.
 5. Discerning :a person aspiring to have a good skill must be able to have a good sense of judgement. Choosing among alternatives. Such individual should be able to know what kind of hard work he or she would be capable of doing.
 6. Ready to take risks: as a skill acquisitor, such individual should be able take risk for the better or for the worst.
To put this discussion to an end, acquiring skills is a way of being productive to yourself and towards the society. You and the society would benefit from each other so the answer to the question "skill acauisition :A must for everyone?", is yes but only if you have what it takes to acquire a skill. My advice is that in anything you do, be versatile and don't just rely on your salary that the government pay you beacsue there would be a time that the people in power would fail you.

Skills acquisition is compulsory but not mandatory. Only few people know the important of skills acquisition, especially in the era that we are now. Truly we are in the education era, but looking at the situation of this country, it will be a very bad idea if we neglect skills acquisition. Our government are not helping in the areas of education and job opportunities, but yet education is very Paramount. We just get to use our brain so we won't be stranded.
As I am, I cherish education as well as skills acquisition. I think the two can work together.
If you decided to choose one out of the two, you get many work to do. You may face the problem of unemployment after graduation. Only those with luck can find the opportunity.
It is advisable to learn some skills before going for education, so you will have what you lean on when the worst comes.

Acquiring a skill is good. On the other hand, what one considers to be a skill may be a  hobby or a different thing  to another .

Many may not need to convert their hobbies to sources of income. This is because they have never considered it.

Our gifts are truly different so because you seem to be making it through your skill doesn't mean that others who are yet to make it  through theirs are not wise or smart.

Yes skill acquisition is a sure must for all!.there are numerous skills out there to learn.we have to understand that Nigeria isn't like abroad where the government have plan for the masses, where there is hope for the masses. In Nigeria, this isn't so,there is no hope for the masses, you are on your own to the point they will tell you"ogbeni motivate yourself ".

The situation is getting worse day by day, even when you study a competitive and lucrative course in Nigeria nawadays,to get job is not still easy.A situation whereby in a hospital, they are to take in 100 nurses but they end up taking 35 nurses up for job so tthey can feed on the allowance meant for the remaining 75,at the end of day,the remaining 75 that were supposed to be employed can not get a job.that is just how dishearteningly the situation has become in Nigeria.
I grew up in a kind of a home where my dad did not believe in the act of getting a skill but once I got out of that house and lockdown started,God make everything to happen in such a way that I had no other means of keeping my sanity than to learn a skill and to the glorly of God I did.
Now I have something that no matter what happens,I can't loose and that can never be in vain.Because government can come and collect my job but there is nothing they can  do to take away the skill of my hands..no not one!.
We should endeavor to learn all the skill we can learn whenever opportunity knocks. We can never learn too much,no way, our brain is always making room to store more.
Your skill is with you for life,no damn retired age can take it away from except you  decide by yourself that you want to rest.
Skill acquisition these days seems to be the easiest and most legit way of earning money so my dear brother and sister, let strive to learn as much as we can and be creative with whatever we learn because that is the only way our work can be unique and people will partonise us.

Skill acquisition I think is a must for everyone, we might not just want to admit it but it is as important as our lives. How many people sees skill acquisition is usually not the way it is, we believe the reason we learn a skill is to bring income for us which is not totally true. Acquiring a skill doesn't necessarily mean it should serve as a means of income to you and that is why everyone needs to be skillful one way or another, be you are rich, medium class or poor. There are many benefits skill acquisition gives us than just making money from it, when you acquire skill it makes you feel secured, you feel like you have an alimony standby, giving you some form of assurance. Acquiring a skill set add value to one's life, when you learn a skill you are inputting to your system what you don't know before, you are adding to what you already know and by that makes you relevant to yourself, your family and the society at large.
When you acquire a skill, you can make it your hubby, you don't have to make it your occupation. By hobby while doing what you like to do best, you relax your nerves, improve your brain and build your system.
Now those who sees a skill set as a means of income are not completely wrong too, I don't blame them its just the way the country is. The country is so messed up, no jobs, those who have one are even scared of loosing it. With the way technology is taking over things, in the next few years I don't think human power would be needed to do most of the jobs, this and many other things people think about everyday and decide to go learn a skill.
So you see why everyone needs to acquire one skill or another, if you don't need it now you will definitely need it later. If its not for other reasons but for the sake of surviving when white collar job denies you and when artificial intelligence begins to take over people's jobs.
I don't even see anyone(youth) these days without a particular skill set, even people in the top class (rich) find a way of learning one to establish it big. Acquiring a skill set is as important as our lives.

Skills acquisition is not a must for everyone, since it is not a rule or law of a land.,but it is so painful that many hasn't discover flexibility and countless benefits that is in skills acquisition., especially in time like this.
Skills acquisition enhances mobilization in the society, and reduces crime rate in the country.
Education on itself, gives a light on how to organize and maintain your business or organization. It is true most parents don't look the other way, and just focus on academic excellence of their children.
I have seen so many people who later regret of not learning skills before going to school., Even some of my friends are still out there looking for job after our youth service. If not for help I received to start a business, I would have become a street walker.
So, I will advise the youth of nowadays to take skills acquisition serious as they take their studies.

Hmmm! The most dangerous thing that should never happen to us as human is we looking down on ourselves just because some people are standing somewhere and they are looking down on us or condemning ourselves just Bea someone is condemning us, this is a worst scenario that must not happen. It is only a blind man and also deaf alongside that will say that he does not know what is going on in the country presently. The economy of the country is getting to the stage where we just don’t need a single source of income to rely on, we need to have some other sources in order for us to be up to the task ahead.
Now, learning a skill does not making you the best and that does not at the same time means you are not the best, same thing applies to not learning a skill, it does not mean you won’t be successful and at the same time, it does not mean you will be successful. So, whatever will happen will be determined by you, allowing people to determine it for you will be a greatest mistake ever. What matters most is that in the process of learning the skill for those that are student, we must ensure that it does not affect our academic performance, it is very important we don’t allow it.
Now, it depends on the purpose of learning the skill, if you decides to make it an hobby, there is no problem in it, and if you decide to learn it in other to be a source of income, that is also good as well. The most important thing is that the skill learning comes from the heart and not a thing of force because a lot of people that are learning a skill today are being forced into it and that’s why are yet to understand the skill.

@Blackie:

Sincerely speaking, one of the things I hate most to hear is when people attached lack of getting a job to learning a particular skill. And what is funny enough is that some are still getting this job. Fine, it is an agreed fact that the unemployment rate in the country is much but that should also make us to realize that the companies or organisation are increasing their standard of application so as to make the job application process more competitive. So, if you are interested in having a white collar job, upgrade yourself and ensure to meet up with the company standard. Let’s stop discouraging people from white collar job all in the name of skill acquisition. The fact that you and I are not able to get a white collar job does not mean those at our back won’t also get. So, if it requires you to take a step further academically, please let’s do it and we would see the outcome.
Now skill acquisition is not bad and it’s a good idea. Even those in white collar job are learning some skills now because the world is going digital and it is only those that can speak the digital language that will move with the train. So, learning a skill is not a bad idea but making the motive of learning to be money oriented is the issue a lot of people have in this country and that is the reason why you  see many of them not finishing the allotted time for that skill just because they have started receiving some tips either from the boss or from someone that gave them work to do without the knowledge of the boss.
It is only God that knows which one that will be rewarding; that is why it is important that we pray to God to order our steps so that we will live a life without regret.

Most important thing we can do is to have something we can do to earn income. Apart from monthly payment. Skill acquisition brings extra money, in case the monthly salary is not stable. I strongly suggest that having this skill is an added advantage to everyone.
